Developing a Positive Mental Attitude – A Task Impossible?

The question that comes up in the mind of any individual that has come across Gordon Brown’s book is, can people really develop a positive mental attitude to life? Does it really work?

Well, my aim here is not to give all the answers to the dozen questions that emerge as a result of this, but as long as I have chosen to delve into the matter, I will try as much to alleviate some pains that these questions have created in the lives of people. The book in question caught my attention by its catchy caption and when I tried to read through, my attention was quickly drawn to simply explore the world through imaginative thinking and a proper, careful study popularly referred to as Research and Findings. I was also captivated by another unique avenue which is attending seminars, workshops, symposiums, conferences basically for renewing of the mind. His theory of developing the habit of viewing or listening to information products such as documentary and educative programmes, presentation and reading of inspirational books that would awaken the giants in me, stayed in my mind for a long time.

All the same, I later discovered that it is one thing for a man to go through a thing and come out without that thing going through the man and remaining. I have watched a lot of people passed through an institution, yet they never become a true representation of that institution. What makes a man is the man in the man. Without the man in the man, everything else is an inference. People go to school for the simple purpose of having a qualification attached to their names, not that they want to become what they opted to study about. Little wonder then many people with certificates of great institutions are not making impact in their generations.

Every man, every woman is created to fill a niche. When you make an input in your field and I make another in my field, this generation will be advanced. Creating a positive mental attitude is to ignite the man in the man to perform his niche, assume his rightful position, and build a conducive world for all to live. Development and progress would have been the goal if every man and woman is working towards the development of a positive mental attitude. Gordon has done a nice job, but who among us will bell the cat? Who is to inculcate the true traditional values and norms to our young ones? Who among us has truly developed that positive mental attitude towards himself or another? Take a look at our home-fronts – Divorce has taken the place of love and good relationship. Children born in such homes cannot be said to be 45% balanced, emotionally. They are deranged by the activities of those that could have given them love and care. How could we offer help, when majority of us are living like people without conscience, ambition and purpose? Our institutions of learning have become a place of all kinds of evil activities, instead of a place to call people to manhood. Our religious affiliations have all the same become places division rather than the peace, discipline, love, morality, care, good relationship and worship of God in truth and in spirit. Are we not guilty of the problems of our time?

Friend, the way forward is the way up. Our lives started from cradle to end up in the grave, so we need to re-discover ourselves as individuals, as fathers, mothers, entrepreneurs, agents, civil servants, etc and begin to do what is expected of us. Discovering ourselves is the first step, the next is to position ourselves to our individual assignments and pursue our set goals to the end. However, we must be daring enough to go for not only gold but also for diamond. Let us develop the mindset to climb the mountain, reaching the pinnacle of anything we set our mind to be.

Finally, making good use of our time is of utmost importance. When we manage our time well, we can truly have time to think about ourselves and others. We cannot accumulate time as we do to money or raw materials, because time waits for no one, and the best time we have to develop is NOW, not tomorrow!

How to Relieve Stress With a Positive Mental Attitude

We tend to think that stress is something that happens to us due to external events and circumstances outside of ourselves that we cannot control. We may be uncomfortable with the idea that we could possibly be the creators of our own stress. Yet, a great deal can be done to relieve stress by taking charge of our inner thoughts and developing a positive mental attitude.

Think of this. If two different people can respond to the same situation in two different ways, does this not suggest that there is a direct correlation between the individual and their response?

So, why is it that one person can feel completely overwhelmed and stressed out by a particularly situation, and another is able to respond calmly and without anxiety?

The answer to this is in our own heads. All of us think differently and perceive situations in different ways. For example, being made redundant may be a disaster to one person. To another, it is an opportunity to make a change. It is the same situation, but two different ways of looking at it.

We all have an inner voice which constantly chats away in our heads telling us what we should do, what we shouldn’t do. It also tells us how to react. Often this voice is self-critical. It may tell us that we look awful when we look in the mirror or that there’s no way we’re going to pass that exam, or the one that says: “he’s never going to look at me!”

Why do we have this voice, where does it come from, and how does it have such an impact on our stress levels?

From the moment of birth, we are absorbing experiences and learning how to think. When we were very young, we did not question what we are told by our parents or teachers, even when they told us we were no good. At that age we could not sift out what would work for us and what wouldn’t, we just believed what we were told to be true, and these ideas, values, beliefs and statements become our world view, whether they are negative or positive.

People who have grown up in an atmosphere of difficulty or negativity can have a more negative way of perceiving things. If you grew up in a family where financial loss meant constant dramatic changes, you may develop a fear around money, so that any difficulties you have later in life may occur to you as greater than they actually are. Or, if you were constantly told that money was hard to come by and that you have to work hard to stay on top, this could also develop a sense of insecurity.

Negative self talk makes things much worse. If you say to yourself that a situation is ‘stressful’ or ‘impossible’, you will actually create stress and feelings of inadequacy. The good news is that this kind of destructive thinking can be changed. You need to be aware of what you are saying to yourself and change this kind of thinking to more positive self talk, such as describing the same situation as ‘a challenge’, which suggests that it is solvable.
It has been scientifically proven that practicing positive self talk on a regular basis has proven benefits for stress, health and productivity.

Your subconscious mind does not differentiate between positive and negative, or what is the truth. It will believe everything you tell it, and respond accordingly. When you tell yourself that you can’t do something, you subconsciously stop looking for a way to solve it.

If you need to relieve stress, try catching yourself in the act of negative thinking, and then switch it to something more empowering. Next time you find yourself thinking that something is too difficult, try asking yourself how you are going to do it, instead of saying that you can’t. Asking the question, ‘how?’ opens up your mind to solutions, whereas the latter closes it down.

There are many ways to relieve stress, but changing your inner voice and viewing things in a more positive way can make a profound and lasting difference to your stress levels. A positive mental attitude takes practice and time, but you can start to see results immediately, and this will increase as long as you practice every day.

Self-Empowerment – Painting Your Positive Mental Self

Let’s get organized first. Begin by writing down what you perceive as your fitness problems and body challenges. Think of it as a personal contract that your life may very well depend on as you work towards that healthy and fit mind and body. Please do not skip this important initial step in our strategy. Just thinking about “it” is not nearly enough because our thoughts tend to run in circles. But by putting it in writing or sharing it with someone creates a sense of personal responsibility towards your goals. Thoughts are powerful but action creates results! We will focus on motivation a little later.

You truly want to succeed at this and so you begin by envisioning yourself, an image that makes you feel good both in the inside and outside. This method of visualization often gets a negative reputation like it is some kind of weird science. It isn’t! What I’m talking about is mental imagery, positive thinking in your fitness recovery undertaking. You don’t need elaborate equipment or technique for this mental exercise you just need to concentrate. It really takes work to make it effective. Let me help in the process by giving you a psychological, emotional and conscious target. It is up to you to make it work towards your own personal fitness achievement.

First of all, know that there will be challenges. We may zigzag to get there with our actions but if you are prepared, visualization will work Exercise Your Mind: Notice when and where you use the word “want.” Pay attention to the actual things and events that are connected with this word. Let go of using the word “want.” Several times a day just focus on your heart’s desire. See yourself and “it” in the picture, experience having and interacting with the image, and feel gratitude. Once a day, spend a longer period of time, three to five minutes resonating with the whole experience, and send this energy out into the universe to pull and help push you. It’s internal motivation, the motivation that is long lasting when practiced regularly.

Most importantly, you get immediate and continuous results, and spins off to other areas of your life. Most who have used positive personal imagery become happier, more assertive in their life’s purpose and are more confident people as well as leaner people. And they stay that way.

Some Thoughts on Mindset – 5 Mental Health Secrets For Great Workouts

Your mental climate during workouts is one of the most significant factors (if not the most significant factor) that will determine the level of success you’ll experience from that workout. What follows are my favorite tricks and tactics for more productive gym sessions:

Let Go Of Results And Simply Do The Right Thing

Sometimes the desire to get a result interferes with the desire to do the right things. If you’re learning how to squat for power meets, one of your goals must be the ability to hit parallel. It’s the right thing to do. You should never let your desire to hit a big number interfere with getting to parallel. If you’re learning ho to do full (“squat”) cleans or snatches, you can’t let the desire to make the lift interfere with squatting under. Instead the goal should be to squat, whether you make the lift or not.

The “right thing” is a premise: “If I do “A” it should result in “B.” Then you test the premise by doing “A” and checking your results. If the results aren’t there, your premise is flawed and is in need of revision. If your premise is sound, you got the predicted result.

By the way, one of the best premises you can adopt is: “If I put in the work, good things should happen.” Try it.

Tighten Up Your Shoelaces

If I knew where I picked this up I’d tell you, but I honestly can’t recall. The idea is simple- when you’re getting revved up for a big lift, tighten your laces. They’ll serve as a visceral reminder to tighten yourself up. I’ve been using this little cue for years, so I guess it must be serving me in some way.

Be Careful Of What You Allow To Define You

We all have flaws and limitations. It’s important however, not to give these imperfections too much credit. After all, you’re equally defined by your strengths as you are by your weaknesses. I’m personally very careful about labeling myself as old, a geek, slow-twitch-dominant, lazy, or whatever rationalization I’ve been stewing over. The reasons for why you can’t are valid and they’ll always be there if you need an excuse. The reasons why you can are just as valid, although most of us don’t call upon them as often as we should.

Lowered Expectations

One of the most consistently rewarding mindsets you can employ is that of “lowered expectations.” I know, it doesn’t sound like anything you’d pick up from a book on high-performance psychology, but allow me to explain: Sometimes, expecting a lot out of yourself, especially when you do it all the time, can hurt more than it can help- if you frequently fail to hit the mark, mounting frustration can seriously sideline your motivation. I’m all for a hard-charging “take no prisoners” attitude, but to be honest, it often pays to give yourself a break sometimes. Anytime you can exceed your expectations (even if they’re low expectations) can really generate a lot of enthusiasm to fuel your gym sessions. Find a happy medium when it comes to your expectations.

Have A Routine, Then Break It

It’s vitally important to have a set methodology in the gym- the way you mentally psyche yourself, the way you warm-up, the way you take weight jumps, how you deal with misses, and so on.

It’s equally vital however, to conscientiously break your routine so that you don’t become overly-dependant on it. If you always use chalk, go without it once in a while. If you always use the same exercise order, break that pattern from time to time. If you always train in the morning, do an occasional afternoon workout. Get away from needing everything to be perfect all the time. Place yourself under some unfamiliar adversity- you’ll be better off for doing so.

If you’ve got a few tricks of your own to share, we’d love to hear them! Just hit the “discuss” link below.

Bodybuilding and a Positive Mental Attitude

It is very important to have a positive mental attitude when you are working your body building program. Having a positive outlook will mean that you are more likely to stick to your program, will be more enthusiastic about your workouts and will have a better chance of reaching your goal.

Like choosing the right rewards, a positive mental attitude will help carry you through the times when you would otherwise get discouraged. Keep in my that you can achieve your goals if you put in the effort. Using the previous advice about motivation will help you to keep this positive mental attitude because you will be able to see the results you have already achieved.

There are several ways that you can help keep it positive mental attitude while you are working your body building program.

Listening to positive music, CDs, and MP3 programs while you are doing your work out is a good step. Since you are more than likely going to be in one place for a good long time while you are doing your exercises, you might as well make that time be more productive. By filling your mind with positive information and motivating messages, you will not only have a better outlook for greater chance of success. Listen to your favourite music and especially if you have some CDs which really make you want to get up and push yourself hard.

Find someone to be your cheerleader. This can either be someone who is working out with you, or you could even have someone that simply is your motivator. Choose someone that will be very confident that you can reach your goal and someone who has a positive outlook in general. While other people cannot be your only motivator, it certainly helps to know that there is someone in your corner cheering you on. If you know someone who also wants to improve their body you could both train at the same time and help to motivate and push each other along. You will find it harder to ditch a session if there is someone else there who really does want to work. This will work the other way too so that when the other person does not feel like training, you can be there to push them along and tell them the reasons why you should both keep to the program.

1 Hour Muscles is a home workout program.

How to Develop a Positive Mental Attitude

We’ve all met people who seem to have everything going for them-ideal upbringing, seemingly unlimited talents, useful contacts, and so on. But why is it they never seem to get to first base, career-wise? The answer: attitude. It is often their attitude that limits their achievements. Although changing attitudes is not easy, it can be done. Here’s a nine-step process that can lead to the development of a positive mental attitude, a will to win, and career success.

1. Take charge of your attitude.
Religious writer Charles Swindoll, encapsulates it precisely: The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill. It will make or break a company… The remarkable thing is that we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past…we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot chance the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude…I am convinced that life is 10 per cent what happens to me and 90 per cent how I react to it. And so it is with you…we are in charge of our attitudes.

2. Practice visualization.
Visualization is one of the most powerful techniques of self-image modification because your visual image can become your reality. Management expert Brian Tracy tells us that there are four elements of visualization and an increase in any one of them will accelerate the rate at which we create the physical equivalent of that mental picture of our life. These four elements are:

• Frequency. People who accomplish extraordinary things continually visualize their desired results.
• Vividness. This is literally seeing things clearly.
• Intensity. When you intensely desire something, it occurs much faster.
• Duration. The longer you imagine a desired future event, the more likely it is to appear.

3. Make affirmations.
Affirmations are strong statements or commands from our conscious to our subconscious mind. They over-ride old information and reinforce new, positive habits of behavior and thought. Affirmations need to be based on the 3Ps: they must be positive, present tense, and personal. For example, if you’re trying to improve your health and general well-being, positive self-talk such as this will help: ‘I’m feeling better now’, ‘I feel young and vital’, ‘I’m reaching my best weight’, and ‘I can really feel the difference my exercise program and change in eating habits are having.’

4. Affirm aloud.
Begin and end each day verbalizing your affirmations. You’ll be amazed how much more confidently you will feel and behave when you’re feeding yourself the right messages. So, in the days leading up to a job interview, for example, tell yourself, aloud, whenever you get the chance: ‘During my interview I will be calm, confident, and in control!’ Don’t forget: what you ‘see’ is what you get; what you ‘feel’ is what you are.

5. Act the part.
Walk, talk, and act exactly as if you are the person you want to be. St Thomas Aquinas referred to this philosophy as ‘as if’; others call it ‘fake it till you make it’. The first step in becoming more confident is to act ‘as if’ you already are.

6. Expose yourself to high-quality information only.
The more you read, listen, watch, and learn about your subject area, the more confident and capable you’ll feel. But we need to be discerning about the quality of information we expose ourselves to. Look on information as food: we should be careful to feed ourselves only the best food. The famous T-Cell study of the 1980s is worth remembering (‘T-Cell’ being a measure of the blood’s healthfulness). The T-Cell of a group actually changed after exposure to varying amounts of positive and negative information. One outcome of the study was that regular exposure to negative information was a health hazard!

7. Associate with positive people.
Fly with the eagles instead of scratching with the chooks. Our parents taught us that ‘we are judged by the company we keep’. They were right. To meet new, positive people, you have to stop associating with the loser-brigade, those dull excuse-makers who end up dragging you down to their level of complacency and incompetence.

8. Imitate positive people.
The qualities we admire and envy in others usually reflect our own underdeveloped capacities. Imitation is vital to learning. Identify those around you with a positive mental attitude and watch what they do. How do they work, what do they say, how do they carry themselves? Select one small behavior at a time and emulate it.

9. Teach others.
When you attempt to articulate and explain a concept to others, you will understand it and internalize it better yourself. Seize every opportunity to share the notion of ‘positiveness’ as a way of helping yourself to become even more familiar with it.

Talisman – Positive Mental Attitude

Yesterday my post was about NMA or negative mental attitude on a side of an imaginary talisman. Today let’s talk about we can reverse that side to having PMA or positive mental attitude, a side that you’ll want to have with you wherever you go.

Now one might be able tell from the title, Success Through a Positive Mental Attitude, that the title says it all. However, the book goes deeper than just success; it talks about PMA as it is a way of life. “Success” to everybody means different things, but in order to achieve their kind of success, one has to develop a positive mental attitude through practice and perseverance. It doesn’t just come “pre-packaged”.

In the previous post, I stated that most people become unhappy because of things that they don’t have. Instead of finding a solution to their woes, they develop a negative mental attitude from inside to out. Realize that, with PMA, it is possible to achieve anything you want including what was stated yesterday:

Wealth
Happiness
Relationship
Friendship
Dream House
Dream Car
Skinny
Muscular
Fame
Confidence

This is not a full list of things so feel free to add to it. I also realize that there are some things in life that are permanent. These things are a lot more difficult to conquer and usually even on the mere thought of these permanent things, it brings out a negative mental attitude in us.

But also realize that even if some things are permanent, there are ways that are unknown to your mind at this point to solving the problem and in order to even see that, you have to first try to at least develop a positive mental attitude.

Think of it as a see-saw. There is a balance. For everything that seems negative in your life, there is something that equality positive that you can have. If there is a low degree of negative, there will be a low degree of positive. If there is a high degree of negative, there will be a high degree of positive as well. It just depends if you’re willing to see that other side or not.

Napoleon Hill once said, “Every adversity, every failure, every heartache carries with it the seed of equal or greater benefit.” It is true that even with the worse adversities, failures, and heartaches, there is something to learn from it and receive from it in a positive form.

That’s why it’s important that instead of saying things such as I cannot, it will bring in a way of looking at things if we say things such as:

I can!
It’s doable!
It’s possible!
There is a way!
I choose how to react to him!
I choose how to react to her!
I need to change myself!
I can change!
I am as gifted as anybody else!
I can do anything!

When you start to reframe the I cannots to I cans, you’ll start to see a power within yourself manifesting all the situations to something positive. You’ll find yourself holding the power to influence yourself and others too.

One of the biggest messages of the book was having a magnificent obsession. And that is simply having an obsession of helping others to make the world a better place through positive mental attitude. Even if you can’t help yourself, and you can’t find happiness within yourself, you might be able to find happiness by helping others feel good or succeed.

Whether this is giving them a compliment, doing a deed, smiling, or any other small thing, these all make a difference in raising people’s moods and allowing yourself to be a more positive person as well. Through PMA, a person will no longer have to use negative ways to get through life. It will build a character of the following traits:

Loving
Courage
Trustworthy
Honest
Patient
Proactive
Just
Confident
Friendly
Peaceful

A character with these traits do not view problems as bad things, but as challenges to overcome. Most people view problems and what the word implies – problem, headache, frustration etc.

Instead of seeing a problem that you may dislike, view the problem as something that is suppose to help you grow as a person. If the problem involves other people, and what they have done to you, it doesn’t matter about them.

What matters is you, so let them go as you cannot be burdened by people problems for your time, whether this is a year, five years, or ten years.

When you let positive mental attitude in the worst of times, you motivate yourself when you feel like you can’t do anything. It will help you motivate others when they feel down as well. It will help you find a way out of what seems impossible for you at the time and it will spread like a fire effecting everybody around you. It will help you attract wealth if you are poor or help you find love in your life if you are alone. It builds character and a pleasing personality that others want to be around and want to learn from.

But most importantly, by having a positive attitude, you will feel healthy, you will feel happy, and you will feel terrific every single day. You will wake up with enthusiasm because you no longer want to waste time sleeping. You notice that there’s a lot of unhappy people who oversleep because they are thinking way too much about their worries, rather than what they can be doing in life! You are what you think about. So never let time pass you by because we only have on life to live and time will be gone. Utilize every moment that you have with an attitude that shines from inside out.

Donald Trump’s Debates: 5 Mental Tricks You Didn’t Notice

Donald Trump has proven himself to be a master persuader. His unlikely rise to prominence in the Republican primaries has riden on the fact that he knows how to work the media during interviews as well as his performances in the GOP debates against the likes of Jeb Bush and Ted Cruz.

When watching the debates, many of his detractors criticize Trump’s apparent lack of substance. For instance, he ducked Megyn Kelly’s question about sexism with a joke about Rosie O’Donnell. He seems to repeat buzz words more than other candidates and often justifies his positions by referring to other people who support his stances, rather than defending them outright. While this may seem like weak arguments, Donald Trump’s debate strategies actually align perfectly with the way humans think and process information. For that reason, Trump’s arguments tend to sink in more than his opponent’s (like Jeb Bush and Ted Cruz) do.

In this video we’ll look at the top 5 relatively unknown psychological truths that Trump exploits to get his point across during interviews and debates.
