Why Positive Affirmations Need a Nurturing Environment to Be Successful

For your practice of saying positive affirmations to have the best chance of being successful you need to practice them in a nurturing environment.

Take the example of germinating seeds. While some seeds are directly planted outdoors, in other cases seeds are germinated in special environments such as a greenhouse where the ambient conditions can be controlled. This gives the germinating seeds the best possible start in life.

In many cases, when you start the practice of saying positive affirmations your mind is in a negative state. It’s like a garden that’s completely overrun with weeds. In such a garden the weeds seem to grow effortlessly and often look much sturdier and healthier than the plants you’re attempting to grow.

Similarly, under such conditions, your mind is more receptive to the negativity that surrounds you. It is in harmony with negativity. Negativity is its base-line state. This is what your mind will readily revert to before your neural re-conditioning. And so you need to create for yourself the equivalent of a greenhouse for your positive affirmations.

Consider another example. This time imagine a patient who has been given a liver transplant yet still continues to drink alcohol. You know that the chances of their body rejecting the new liver are going to be very high. Likewise, for your mind to accept your new positive affirmations you need to immerse yourself in a positive, nurturing, supportive environment to give your new affirmations the best possible chance of taking hold.

You know how individuals working an environment where there are high levels of potentially life-threatening radioactive radiation have to wear a dosimeter to show when they have reached their radiation threshold. Well, it’s a pity there isn’t such a dosimeter for negativity so that you know when you’ve reached your critical level of negativity. You see you have to take into account that it’s not only what people say it’s people’s thoughts as well. Thoughts have energy. So just being around a negative person can place you in a very vulnerable state.

Having said this some people are very attuned to their environment and can readily sense whether it has a positive or negative energy signature even if there isn’t anyone there. And, even if you’re a bit of a sceptic I bet you’ve had the experience, at some point, where you’ve been somewhere and the atmosphere felt distinctly uncomfortable although you could quite say why.

The first 30-90 days of practicing your new affirmations are critical. You may need to audit your friends, for example and ensure that you are not spending time around people who are negative and not supportive of you.

In fact, you want to do the polar opposite. Find yourself a new group of friends and or associates who are positive, who think on a higher plane than you and who have accomplished the things that you want to achieve.

And if you don’t personally know such people then you can certainly gain access to such individuals even if it’s just reading their biographies, their books, listening to their audios and watching their videos. And that means that you don’t necessarily have to rely on the ‘support’ of individuals who are still alive. There are many individuals who are now dead but whose spirit you can still tap into. And “spirit” here is not used in a religious context but simply refers to the essence of someone. By studying the world’s great achievers and people who inspire and motivate you can begin to understand how they thought about things and expand your own thinking.

If you completely immerse yourself in a positive environment you’ll make it an uncomfortable environment for your negative thoughts and your practice of saying daily positive affirmations will have the best chance of success.

How to Make Positive Affirmations Work in Your Life

Positive affirmations work. Period. They change lives. They displace negativity. They remove limiting beliefs. They open us to possibilities, change the way we view ourselves and create a happier, more forward thinking outlook. They’re extremely powerful and their accessible to everyone.

That doesn’t mean they work automatically, though. It’s entirely possible to try to utilize affirmations unsuccessfully. That generally stems from misunderstanding the process or not having a full sense of what makes the right kind of positive self-talk sufficiently powerful to overcome negative subconscious defenses. Here are a few pointers that can really take your affirmations to the next level.

First, retain credibility. You’re not going to experience the desired effect if your positive affirmations ring hollow on either a conscious or subconscious level. If the content of your affirming comments seems like pure fiction, the message just isn’t going to get through the way you’d like it to.

Second, be mindful of the power of repetition. It’s a key to successful affirmation. If you repeat a given affirmation once a week, it isn’t going to have the power or resonance of one used repeatedly every day. Remember, you’re trying to displace and reconfigure negative thinking that’s been part of your life for quite some time. That requires a consistency and frequency in your efforts.

Third, have a little patience. Rome wasn’t built in a day. The artifice of negativity that has unfortunate repercussions for your life wasn’t built in a day, either. You’re not going to tear it down in the course of a single week. Commit yourself to getting the job done and follow through with your positive self-talk for the long run. At some point (probably sooner than you might really think), you’ll notice a change coming over you.

Fourth, tone matters. You aren’t doing your affirmations out loud, but your internal “voice” has a tone of its own and you control it. If your affirmation is dripping with contempt or wrapped in sarcasm, it isn’t going to have the desired effect. If it’s desperate, angry or insincere, you can’t expect to experience a change. Use a sincere, forward, calm and clear voice when you deliver your positive affirmations.

You can change the way you think and feel. Positive self-talk is a great way to do it. You just need to engage in the activity with a knowledge of what makes the approach successful. That includes repetition, patience, credibility and the right tone.

Developing a Positive Attitude With Affirmations – An Approach That Works!

A positive attitude doesn’t stem from blind luck. It isn’t the result of getting a discount on your morning coffee or a smile from a stranger, either. A real positive outlook on life comes from within. So doesn’t it make sense to focus on what’s happening on the inside to develop one?

It seems a lot easier to change our outlooks by making external alterations. A new car. A new haircut. A new house. Things of that nature “feel” like shortcuts to a better disposition. Sometimes they work, too–but only temporarily. The shine wears off quickly and we’re back to where we started.

That’s because attitude has nothing to do with our external realities. Mother Theresa, by all accounts, managed to keep a pretty upbeat perspective even though she was surrounded by the horrors of disease and poverty.

How do we get there, though? Changing our hair is easy. Changing our minds seems impossible by comparison. Our thinking is a complex combination of socialization, experience, genetics and assorted other mysteries that traditional science still can’t get handle on. How are we supposed to make that internal adjustment?

One of the most effective ways to do it involves the use of affirmations. By making positive, affirmative statements to yourself and feeling them in a very real way, you can start to reprogram your disposition. You can empower your mind to reject negativity and bask in the glow of the positive. Affirmations, in essence, shove out the ugly thinking, replacing it with positive hooks on which we can hang our daily hats.

This is a highly effective way to improve your outlook on life and when it’s done correctly, you’ll notice changes in your disposition quite quickly. You’re not stuck with your current attitude and there’s no reason to rush out for a box of donuts, a great new set of clothes or a bottle of wine to improve it. Don’t bother with those trivial externalities. Happiness and a positive perspective come from within.

Develop your positive attitude by using self-affirmations. They’re fast. They’re easy. They’re fun. And best of all, they really work.

So, you want to know more about developing a positive attitude. I strongly recommend this fascinating site that absolutely revolutionizes the process of using affirmations to create a more positive outlook on life. It makes the development of a positive outlook as easy as flipping a switch! If you don’t know about affirmation jingles and their potential, it’s time for you to take a look!

Using Positive Affirmations to Achieve Any Goal

I set goals. I have been setting goals for most of my life. When I was a paperboy I used to set goals for how many new customers I would acquire so that I could win whatever prize the Monterey Peninsula Herald was giving to the paperboys that month. For the longest time I was on a roll, it seemed like nearly every goal I set, and I really had a desire for, I achieved. But then there came a time when I couldn’t achieve anything. I would set goals for myself in my business and I would come close, but something would always get in the way of success. It seemed like I was finding ways of talking my way out of the winner’s circle.

Does this happen to you? Do you feel like you are always talking yourself out of success? As soon as you start to set goals for yourself, do you, like I used to, suddenly have nagging thoughts about how you aren’t up to the task? Do you doubt your qualifications to carry it through? Do you feel like you just don’t have what it takes?

If this has happened to you, and I’ll bet that it has, then you need to listen to your inner dialogue and change it to focus on the positive. You see, my belief is that we have been conditioned to react to the negative events in our lives. If you don’t believe me try to think about how many positive things happened to you today. Now think about how many negative things happened to you today. If you could remember more negative than positive things you’ve already proved my point. How can you change this perspective? The trick is that instead of obeying your negative commands, you can use positive self-talk to counter the negativity in your life and then overcome nearly all the anxious thoughts that come with them.

Setting Goals and Sticking to Them with Positive Self-Talk

If you are like nearly everyone else on this planet, when you set your goals you are initially filled with enthusiasm and excitement. You can’t wait to start out on your path to success. But then you might think, “I don’t know, I tried that once and it didn’t work” or maybe “That might work for Ernie but I don’t have the same education he has.” You thoughts begin to get clouded with self-doubt and self-defeating thoughts that can stop you in your tracks before you even get started.

The fact is that it can be extremely difficult to make the most of your life when you are constantly talking yourself out of being a success. Believe me, I know! Worse, it can be frustrating and discouraging to have these thoughts constantly plaguing you because they can cause you to quit even before you make an attempt! Many of us, in fact, don’t even realize we have these negative thoughts. The only things you know is that you don’t have the confidence to stick to your plans and reach your goals.

But I didn’t write this article to discourage you. I wrote this article to let you know that there is another way!

Positive self-talk is an effective method that you can use when setting your goals. It can ensure that you stick to them, even if you have never been able to do this before. The way this method works is that once you’ve decided what goal is important to you, and have planned the logistics of how you are going to attain your goal, you use positive self talk to reinforcement your desire. When self-doubt starts kicking in, you respond with positive affirmations that boost your confidence in your success so that you don’t surrender to negative pressures. You’re obviously not a quitter and you are certainly not a failure so use this method to strengthen your belief in yourself!

Re-Programming Your Mind

My practice, Total Mind Therapy, uses this tag line, “Helping you program your mind for success”. One of the ways you can do this is though the use of affirmations. What are affirmations? Affirmations are essentially positive statements that you repeat to yourself that re-program your mind in a positive direction. You can use positive affirmations the moment you have a self-defeating thought, countering negativity with a motivating statement.

Examples of positive affirmations are: “I am worthy of great success,” or “I see myself in the winner’s circle.” Using these types of statements replace negativity with empowering thoughts that will help you move toward your goals.

Implementing positive self-talk into your daily life is easier than you might think. Right now you are probably not aware of the severity of the negative dialogue currently within your mind. However, once you start keeping track and begin countering these thoughts with positive self-talk, you will suddenly realize that you have been self-sabotaging the goals you set for yourself, almost from the minute that you make them. Using this process will open your eyes to exactly how much your inner conversation has been interfering with your success. Once you start to get a handle on them you’ll again feel hopeful and begin to have the confidence that you can now set goals and surpass them.

Using your positive self-talk, you will be able to easily set and achieve your long and short-term goals. And as you use your affirmations, you’ll have tools within your reach to help you push yourself further than ever before. Learning to counteract and then quiet negativity with positive thoughts and affirmations will move you faster and more easily toward setting and attaining your future goals with ease.

Positive Affirmations – The Power of Your Words

You use positive affirmations to help you to achieve your goals. And fundamentally, positive affirmations are just words but it is the way in which you combine those words and the actual words that you use in creating your affirmations that mean the difference between succeeding in achieving your goals or failing.

The words you use, both spoken and unspoken, literally control the results you achieve in your life. As Bill Bartmann said:

“The words that we use to describe the thing we want predicates more often than not our own success or own failure.”

Yet, far too many people do not pay attention to the words they use to describe themselves far less the words they use to describe what they desire. In many cases the words that people use to describe themselves are often negative and erode their self-esteem making it even more challenging to achieve the results that they desire. As Gloria Steinem said:

“Self-esteem isn’t everything; it’s just that there’s nothing without it.”

They then compound matters by describing what they want as a goal. Now some individuals are very clear about what a goal is and what the term goal means to them. They are also very confident about achieving the goals that they set. However, there are others to whom the word goal actually has negative connotations.

To this group of individuals a goal is something which is generally beyond their reach. It’s something they aspire to but deep down inside they do not expect to achieve it. So they set a goal and they fulfil their prophecy that they will not achieve it. In other words they self-sabotage their attempts to accomplish their goal. It then becomes one more on a long list of goals set but not achieved.

So the next time they set a goal their sub-conscious mind checks their personal history of goal setting and goal achievement, sees that the norm is that majority of goals set are not achieved and so again sabotages the individual’s effort to achieve this new goal as well. A pattern is established and failing to achieve your goals becomes a habit because the sub-conscious mind resists change. It doesn’t like to upset the status quo.

Maybe this has happened to you and if not to you personally, you can probably think of someone to whom this happens time and time again. They set goals and are very enthusiastic for a while but before long the goal is abandoned. They don’t even go the distance in their attempt to achieve their goal. Or they repeatedly lament about the number of projects they start but don’t finish.

If you do fall into this category and you’re using positive affirmations with respect to “goals” you’re aiming to achieve, then it’s likely that you will be disappointed.

There are several different ways to overcome this problem. Bill Bartmann suggests that instead of setting goals you make a promise. Now, admittedly, some people are just as bad at keeping their promises but, generally, when someone makes a promise it is a serious commitment. To some individuals a promise is almost sacred. They would rather die than break a promise.

If you fall into this latter category then you know that when you make a promise that:

1. You don’t do so lightly, and

2. You do everything in your power to fulfil your promise.

As a result, you know and those close to you know that even if you don’t fulfil your promise that you would have done all that you could to carry out your promise and that nothing more could realistically be asked of you. However, because you pull the stops out when you do make a promise your track record for fulfilling your promises is high.

Thus, when your sub-conscious mind learns that you’ve made a new promise. It sends out the red alert. And it starts to work flat out, working with you rather than against you, to help you achieve your goal and manifest your promise or positive affirmation.

Practicing Daily Positive Affirmations – Wash Your Mouth Out With Soap!

Actually, I’m not recommending that when practicing daily positive affirmations that you need to literally wash your mouth out with soap – I’m just using the expression figuratively. Allow me to explain further.

You’ve probably heard the expression used when someone, usually a child, is overhead uttering profanity. And the reason why I’m using the expression here is because so many times people tell me that they are practicing daily positive affirmations but 99% of what comes out of their mouth is negative.

If you have a conversation with these individuals they are constantly putting themselves down and saying what they aren’t good at. They are quick to list their faults and quick at identifying what’s wrong with their lives.

What they don’t seem to realise is that every time they put themselves down or ‘highlight’ what they don’t like about their life, they are affirming what they don’t want in their lives. And they are negating any of the positive effects of their practice of positive affirmations.

“You will never, ever amass enough power to accomplish your goals and your dreams if you are constantly weakening yourself.”

James Arthur Ray, Author of “Harmonic Wealth”

Plus, when you listen to these individuals, their negative self-talk is always done in a very matter-of-fact manner because it’s what they truly believe about themselves. But when they say their positive affirmations you can bet that same degree of matter-of-factness is most definitely absent. So they sabotage their efforts to create positive change in two ways:

1. They don’t clean up their act regarding their self-talk, and
2. They do not fully commit to their positive affirmations.

With respect to the latter when you practice your affirmations you have to practice them as though they are completely true even though they may not be as yet. Now I can sense that you have doubts about this. Then understand this – the negative things you say about yourself may be true now but were not always the case. You developed limiting beliefs and practiced negative affirmations for so long that they become fact.

The actor Cary Grant said,

“I pretended to be somebody I wanted to be until finally I became that person. Or he became me.”

And he also said,

“Everyone wants to be Cary Grant. Even I want to be Cary Grant.”

In other words he was practicing a role that he wanted, enjoyed and liked. You can do the same. You are the director and leading actor in this movie which, incidentally, is called “This is Your Life”.

I can hear you say,

“But the fact is…”

Forget the facts! As Patricia Shambrook said,

“Don’t give me the facts, give me the truth. The facts are always changing.”

And the truth is you were born as close to perfection as anything can be. The majority of your limiting and negative beliefs were learnt and they were ingrained into you through repetition.

It’s time for change.

You can re-program your mind for the life you desire. And ironically, you can achieve this through repetition as well but the through the repetition of what you want.

And so you have to stay in character. You can’t practice daily positive affirmations at a set time of day and then for the rest of the day trash yourself with your negative self-talk.

But you may have to take baby steps. For instance, if you say to yourself “I’m hopeless at managing money” you may want to practice saying “I’m getting better at managing money” until you feel confident enough to practice the affirmation “I’m an excellent money manager”.

It is not expected that you monitor your thoughts and self-talk every moment of the day but do regularly check in to what you’re saying. You can also ask your close friends to help you with this exercise and a coach will certainly pick up on any negative self-talk because it’s amazing at how oblivious some people can be to this. And, if all else fails, keep a bar of soap handy for when you hear that trashy, profane negative self-talk coming from your mouth.

And if washing your mouth out with soap is a tad too extreme then I’d like to recommend something far more enjoyable to help you stay on track with your practice of daily positive affirmations Visit http://www.CreateYourMindMovies.com for a wealth of resources that will help make practicing affirmations effortless and fun.

Positive Affirmations Or Negative Affirmations – You Choose!

One of the most powerful tools we can use to change our beliefs and our behaviors is the tool known as affirmations.

Affirmations are simple, short, strong messages that we send to ourselves, by repeating them out loud or silently. Affirmations can also be written.

There’s a good reason why we should master the use of affirmations. If you don’t learn how to choose and use positive affirmations, you will be a victim of the negative affirmations you are already repeating to yourself.

Do you ever catch yourself saying something like, “There you go again, being stupid again. Don’t you ever learn? Can’t you ever do anything right?”

For many people, this is a typical affirmation that runs through their head many times a day.

If you take a look at this particular affirmation, you will notice that it is very, very negative. It says to the person, “You are stupid. You are always wrong, and you will always be wrong.”

Affirmations can be incredibly powerful, whether they are positive or negative. An affirmation acts like a form of hypnosis. It tells the listener how to be and how to behave.

Can you imagine the effect of such a negative affirmation, repeated dozens or even hundreds of times a day, over many years?

When you make the decision to start using positive affirmations, you will be challenging many years of negative affirmations that you have used in the past. You need to experiment and discover the best way that positive affirmations can work for you. There is a lot of information available about how to use positive affirmations, and not every technique is the same. Not every system will work well for each person, as we are all individual.

Still, there are many people who claim that positive affirmations don’t work for them. They try using positive affirmations for a while, and then they get bored, or they give up when they don’t see the results they want right away. Why do positive affirmations sometimes appear not to work?

Let’s get scientific about this. Get out a calculator, or a pen and paper. Now, take a bit of time to think how many negative affirmations go through your mind every hour. How often do you catch a subtle little thought fleeting through your brain that is really a put down of yourself and your abilities. Does it happen once an hour? Ten times an hour? More?

Now multiply that number by the hours you are usually awake during the day. Multiply that number by the number of days you have been alive since you were a child.

The resulting number will give you a rough idea of how many negative affirmations you have said to yourself during your life time. If you are like many people, the number of negative affirmations is a huge, astounding number, perhaps in the tens of thousands or even the hundreds of thousands of times.

Do you have an idea now why negative ideas can be so entrenched in your mind, and do you see why doing positive affirmations for a few weeks might not be enough to turn the tide of your own negative opinion?

For affirmations to work, you’ll have to commit to doing them long enough and often enough. That might mean, repeating your positive affirmations hundreds of times a day for many months. You’ll need to find a way to phrase your positive affirmations so that your mind can accept them.

If you give up on the idea of using positive affirmations, it’s all too easy to slip back into letting negative affirmations rule your life.

You are probably doing affirmations already, you just need to make sure the message you are affirming is the one you really want to hear.

Daily Positive Affirmations change things for the better

Our lives have been influenced by whay we say to ourselves because our thought and behaviour are not just a product of our conscious mind but also of our subconscious. As a result, daily positive affirmations are said to change those negative thoughts into positive ones and start making a change for the better.

Because it changes the way you see things and the way you deal with life, daily positive affirmations are not just beneficial for yourself but also to people that you deal with everyday. Daily positive affirmations are done by talking and communicating to yourself positive things that you want to inculcate into your subconscious.

If for example as a child you are being told repeatedly that you are stupid or dull, it would, in the end, affect the way you think about yourself, your behavior, and you lose confidence in yourself. You may even unconsciously reinforce the idea in your subconscious by telling yourself how stupid you are every time you are not doing something right.

If you are bombarded constantly with negative statements, you also tend to feel tired, with low energy, and you end up always in doubt. Truly, by changing the way we think, we can do better and we can strive to reach our goals, and be happy with life, and having daily positive affirmations is a great tool in doing this.

In making positive affirmations, you have to create positive sentences that you will tell yourself everyday – either mentally or saying it aloud. Saying it aloud is seen to be more effective as it can be clearer when heard. These short sentences are formulated in a positive way and make sure you are not using negative words.

Say, if you want to lose weight and you want to retrain your mind to getting into shape, you tell yourself ‘I choose to be slim, attractive and healthy’ and not ‘I am not fat.’ The mention of ‘fat’ may bring in negative thoughts into your mind, and of course, you might not even want to hear the word. Also make statements as if they are already happening and true. Instead of telling yourself, ‘I want lots of money,’ go tell yourself, ‘I can see more money coming to me’.

In making sure you are drafting good statements for your daily positive affirmations, you can find many resources online on how to make your own affirmations. You can even find some CDs and videos of positive affirmations that you just have to watch everyday.

Another technique in retraining your mind fast is by the use of subliminal messages. Unlike positive affirmations, these messages are not grasp by your conscious mind but reaches out directly to your subconscious. These messages are often embedded in mediums like videos or photos, and are even found in movies and ads. Although these messages are not readily grasped by the conscious mind, they too can affect the way people act and behave. When put into good use, positive subliminal messages can be a good tool in changing the negative thoughts your have to positive ones.

Carolyn Anderson practices positive affirmations to help her live a positive life. If you are interested in subliminal messages, check out this Subliminal Power. Also check out Brain Bullet, a software that flashes positive affirmations on your screen.
