Importance of Positive Attitude and How to Develop It

I am the only child for my parents and was pampered well in my family. Not sure how, I picked up a bad temper in my child hood. I used to be a jerk and hurt the feelings of my friends and family many times. I didn’t realize what I was doing until I read a story in my tenth grade. This story had a great impact on me and helped me to understand that a verbal wound caused by anger/ temper is as bad as a physical wound caused by a knife. Today, I want to share this story with you.

There once was a little boy who had a bad temper. His father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into the back of the fence. On the first day, the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Over the next few weeks, as he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily gradually dwindled down.

He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than hammering the nails into the fence. Finally, the day came when the boy did not lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and his father suggested that he pull out a nail each day he was able to hold his temper.

The days passed and the boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone. The father took his son by the fan and led him to the fence. He said “You have done well, my son by holding your temper. But, look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, you leave a scar like the hole in the fence. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won’t matter how many times you say sorry, the wound is still there”.

When I read this story, I flash backed to my child hood and thought of all the incidents when I had hurt the feelings of others. I was really ashamed of my behavior and apologized to each one I hurt knowing that I could only alleviate the pain of the wound and burden of my guilt but cannot remove the scar.

Today, after years of practice, I could say that I am very conscious of my attitude and have been quite successful in dealing complex situations without hurting the people involved most of the time. Here are some of the ways you can develop a very healthy attitude (control your anger) and have long lasting enriched relationships ( family and business)

1. I always try to remember the story above when I have a strong urge to blast off. It really helps me to look at the situation from a different perspective and cools me down for the moment. Similarly, You can create a mental picture of an incident and its repercussions that happened in your life ( when you were either an victim of some one’s temper or you had verbally wounded someone) and had a deep impact on you.

2. Invest some time and effort in personal development. If you are reading this article, you sure are investing and are on the right track. Every time you invest into Personal development, you are increasing your mental and emotional strength required to handle the curves life throws at you. A person who has high level of emotional and mental strength will either not panic or lose temper during stressful times as he understands the simple fact that how you treat others is a true reflection of how you treat your self.

3.Understand that there is no such thing as constructive criticism. Sometimes, we do either criticize or get frustrated with the person involved ( for example, kids) for their actions. Unknowingly, we might hurt them. It is important we understand others perspective and be patient with them. Patience is a virtue and should be practiced diligently. Always expect the best to happen with strong faith and enduring patience.

4. Practice some form of meditation for at least fifteen minutes a day. For starters who are not used to meditation, take some time out for yourself and relax . This simple exercise would release the stress/anxieties accumulated within and rejuvenates you.

And there are many more ways to maintain a healthy attitude in life . In this article, I have listed the ones that I have been using diligently to maintain a healthy attitude towards others.

In a nut shell, you can have a positive attitude towards others by simply being very conscious of the fact that the words you speak reflect your attitude and can be used to either add value or to hurt others. The choice is yours. The good news is that you can be in total control of your attitude and develop life time relationships by taking simple steps as mentioned in this article.

5. Calculate Risks: Risks are always a part of any business endeavor. But you must be able to weigh every investment and its corresponding return. You have to see how your decision will impact the business before you even implement it.

It is also necessary that you have a benchmark of success for your business so that you can check back at certain times to see if it is indeed progressing.

6. Consider Your Employees’ Welfare: Aside from thinking about how your decision will affect the business, you also have to consider how it will affect each and every one of your employees.

Any successful business owner will tell you that you cannot accomplish this on your own but you need a team of talented, loyal people working towards your goals.

7. Be Forewarned: If you see early signs of possible obstacles, then do your best to resolve it before it can even snowball into something larger. Even if you fail to resolve it when you see it the first time, at least you won’t be doing severe damage control later on.

8. Get to the Bottom of Things: Instead of solving the effects, see to it that you go right to the source of the problem. In order to understand completely, you must get all the facts and underlying truths. Never stop asking questions.

By taking these tips into mind, you will definitely be able to develop a business/entrepreneur mindset. Without it, your business won’t flourish as long as you want it to.

– Help others. Volunteer your time or your abilities. The more you share and help those who need it, the more you will feel positive in yourself. Try helping out or volunteering in a charity if you have difficulties in life and you will feel a surge of positive feeling afterwards.

– Be with positive people. Stay away from those who draw you to negative thoughts and discouragements. One simple way to learn how to be positive in life is to surround yourself with positive people.

– Be thankful. Even if there are troubles in your way, you can always find things that you will be grateful for. Many things in life are valued only if we lost them or we badly needed them, so take time to appreciate and be thankful for them. Don’t look at your life through the troubles you have met. Instead, look at it through the things that worked well, through your successes in life and the positive things that happened to you. Always outweigh the negative thoughts with the good ones.

Learning how to be positive in life is indeed one way to make better relationships, good health, success and a happier life. So take time to cultivate positive thinking.

2. Use self talk. Talk to yourself in a positive manner. By talking to yourself in a positive manner you will be reprogramming yourself to think in a positive way. For example: when you wake up say today is a great day, every thing good happens to me, I love my life, I am going to enjoy today no matter what, I am going to be financially free, I believe in my self, I am a positive thinker, I like myself etc. By saying things like this to yourself you allow change the picture of yourself in you mind to a positive one! And once you have done this, you have created a positive mind!

How to Develop a Positive Mental Attitude

We’ve all met people who seem to have everything going for them-ideal upbringing, seemingly unlimited talents, useful contacts, and so on. But why is it they never seem to get to first base, career-wise? The answer: attitude. It is often their attitude that limits their achievements. Although changing attitudes is not easy, it can be done. Here’s a nine-step process that can lead to the development of a positive mental attitude, a will to win, and career success.

1. Take charge of your attitude.
Religious writer Charles Swindoll, encapsulates it precisely: The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill. It will make or break a company… The remarkable thing is that we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past…we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot chance the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude…I am convinced that life is 10 per cent what happens to me and 90 per cent how I react to it. And so it is with you…we are in charge of our attitudes.

2. Practice visualization.
Visualization is one of the most powerful techniques of self-image modification because your visual image can become your reality. Management expert Brian Tracy tells us that there are four elements of visualization and an increase in any one of them will accelerate the rate at which we create the physical equivalent of that mental picture of our life. These four elements are:

• Frequency. People who accomplish extraordinary things continually visualize their desired results.
• Vividness. This is literally seeing things clearly.
• Intensity. When you intensely desire something, it occurs much faster.
• Duration. The longer you imagine a desired future event, the more likely it is to appear.

3. Make affirmations.
Affirmations are strong statements or commands from our conscious to our subconscious mind. They over-ride old information and reinforce new, positive habits of behavior and thought. Affirmations need to be based on the 3Ps: they must be positive, present tense, and personal. For example, if you’re trying to improve your health and general well-being, positive self-talk such as this will help: ‘I’m feeling better now’, ‘I feel young and vital’, ‘I’m reaching my best weight’, and ‘I can really feel the difference my exercise program and change in eating habits are having.’

4. Affirm aloud.
Begin and end each day verbalizing your affirmations. You’ll be amazed how much more confidently you will feel and behave when you’re feeding yourself the right messages. So, in the days leading up to a job interview, for example, tell yourself, aloud, whenever you get the chance: ‘During my interview I will be calm, confident, and in control!’ Don’t forget: what you ‘see’ is what you get; what you ‘feel’ is what you are.

5. Act the part.
Walk, talk, and act exactly as if you are the person you want to be. St Thomas Aquinas referred to this philosophy as ‘as if’; others call it ‘fake it till you make it’. The first step in becoming more confident is to act ‘as if’ you already are.

6. Expose yourself to high-quality information only.
The more you read, listen, watch, and learn about your subject area, the more confident and capable you’ll feel. But we need to be discerning about the quality of information we expose ourselves to. Look on information as food: we should be careful to feed ourselves only the best food. The famous T-Cell study of the 1980s is worth remembering (‘T-Cell’ being a measure of the blood’s healthfulness). The T-Cell of a group actually changed after exposure to varying amounts of positive and negative information. One outcome of the study was that regular exposure to negative information was a health hazard!

7. Associate with positive people.
Fly with the eagles instead of scratching with the chooks. Our parents taught us that ‘we are judged by the company we keep’. They were right. To meet new, positive people, you have to stop associating with the loser-brigade, those dull excuse-makers who end up dragging you down to their level of complacency and incompetence.

8. Imitate positive people.
The qualities we admire and envy in others usually reflect our own underdeveloped capacities. Imitation is vital to learning. Identify those around you with a positive mental attitude and watch what they do. How do they work, what do they say, how do they carry themselves? Select one small behavior at a time and emulate it.

9. Teach others.
When you attempt to articulate and explain a concept to others, you will understand it and internalize it better yourself. Seize every opportunity to share the notion of ‘positiveness’ as a way of helping yourself to become even more familiar with it.

I want to share with you a few ways on how to keep a positive mindset.

How to Keep a Positive Mindset — Focus on Positive Personal Development Daily

Feeding your mind with positive things each day will help you maintain a positive mindset and attitude. Get books that focus on helping you to be a more positive and better person, listen to uplifting and encouraging audio, and watch motivational videos.

The great thing about audio is that you can listen to it in the car, or in the background while you’re busy cleaning your house, cooking, washing your car, etc.

Focus on feeding these positive things into your mind each and every day for at least 30 minutes.

I also recommend that you pick up a positive personal development book, such as The Secret Code of Success by Noah St. John and read at least 30 minutes each day in addition to the audio and video personal development.

After you finish that book, start on a new book immediately or re-read the book you just finished.

At this moment you may be thinking that you don’t have enough time to do this each day, but you do. If your life is important to you, you will make time to invest in yourself. Also know this, as you improve your own life, you will improve the lives of others.

Use Positive Afformations – The power of positive afformations, when used consistently, can change your life. So, instead of focusing on negative things, or why something is so difficult or hard; focus on positive afformations instead.

If you are struggling with something, then you want to overcome that struggle. Instead of wondering why or asking why that challenge or struggle is so tough; ask better questions. Let me give you some examples.

Instead of saying something negative like “Why is life so tough?”, say and think “Why is life so good?” “Why do I enjoy my life so much?”

This will shift your mind away from that negative thinking, and you’ll begin to think of good, positive things.

Using afformations like this can also help you achieve goals. For example, if you want to be a better speaker, or if you want more friends use afformations such as:

“Why is it so easy for me to communicate so well, and so clearly in front of others?”

“Why do I have so many friends that like, trust, and respect me?”

As you continue to use and apply positive afformations like this your mind will search and find the answers, and if you don’t know the answers your mind will continue to search as long as you keep speaking these afformations, and your mind will guide you to the actions you need to take in order to get your answers.

So, if you want more friends, perhaps you need to focus on yourself being a better friend by being less negative, less critical, more respectful, etc. etc.

Avoid Negativity – Stop putting trash into your mind. Avoid negative things and negative people. If you want to have a positive mindset, and your current “friends” are mostly negative and drag you down, then its time to get new friends. The things we watch, the things we read, the people we follow, and the people we hang around influence who we are.

This will affect how we think and believe, and our beliefs affect how we act, and it is our actions that affect our lives.

This is why it is important that you surround yourself as much as possible with things and people that are positive, and avoid negativity.

Take Action Daily to Improve Yourself – I don’t want you to misunderstand me here. If you want a better, more positive life it will take more than just having a positive mindset or attitude. You must take action!

I do believe that it begins with having a positive, prosperous, abundant, success driven mindset; and it is this same mindset that will carry you through the challenges and help you break through your struggles; but action is required.

As you focus and work on creating a better and more positive mindset you will learn of things you need to do or changes you must make in order to improve your life, and the lives of those around you; but if you ignore or refuse to do these necessary actions or make these necessary changes then the better life you want for yourself and those you love will not come.

So, as you learn what you need to do to improve your life and your mindset, commit yourself to the task and take daily action.
