How to Relieve Stress With a Positive Mental Attitude

We tend to think that stress is something that happens to us due to external events and circumstances outside of ourselves that we cannot control. We may be uncomfortable with the idea that we could possibly be the creators of our own stress. Yet, a great deal can be done to relieve stress by taking charge of our inner thoughts and developing a positive mental attitude.

Think of this. If two different people can respond to the same situation in two different ways, does this not suggest that there is a direct correlation between the individual and their response?

So, why is it that one person can feel completely overwhelmed and stressed out by a particularly situation, and another is able to respond calmly and without anxiety?

The answer to this is in our own heads. All of us think differently and perceive situations in different ways. For example, being made redundant may be a disaster to one person. To another, it is an opportunity to make a change. It is the same situation, but two different ways of looking at it.

We all have an inner voice which constantly chats away in our heads telling us what we should do, what we shouldn’t do. It also tells us how to react. Often this voice is self-critical. It may tell us that we look awful when we look in the mirror or that there’s no way we’re going to pass that exam, or the one that says: “he’s never going to look at me!”

Why do we have this voice, where does it come from, and how does it have such an impact on our stress levels?

From the moment of birth, we are absorbing experiences and learning how to think. When we were very young, we did not question what we are told by our parents or teachers, even when they told us we were no good. At that age we could not sift out what would work for us and what wouldn’t, we just believed what we were told to be true, and these ideas, values, beliefs and statements become our world view, whether they are negative or positive.

People who have grown up in an atmosphere of difficulty or negativity can have a more negative way of perceiving things. If you grew up in a family where financial loss meant constant dramatic changes, you may develop a fear around money, so that any difficulties you have later in life may occur to you as greater than they actually are. Or, if you were constantly told that money was hard to come by and that you have to work hard to stay on top, this could also develop a sense of insecurity.

Negative self talk makes things much worse. If you say to yourself that a situation is ‘stressful’ or ‘impossible’, you will actually create stress and feelings of inadequacy. The good news is that this kind of destructive thinking can be changed. You need to be aware of what you are saying to yourself and change this kind of thinking to more positive self talk, such as describing the same situation as ‘a challenge’, which suggests that it is solvable.
It has been scientifically proven that practicing positive self talk on a regular basis has proven benefits for stress, health and productivity.

Your subconscious mind does not differentiate between positive and negative, or what is the truth. It will believe everything you tell it, and respond accordingly. When you tell yourself that you can’t do something, you subconsciously stop looking for a way to solve it.

If you need to relieve stress, try catching yourself in the act of negative thinking, and then switch it to something more empowering. Next time you find yourself thinking that something is too difficult, try asking yourself how you are going to do it, instead of saying that you can’t. Asking the question, ‘how?’ opens up your mind to solutions, whereas the latter closes it down.

There are many ways to relieve stress, but changing your inner voice and viewing things in a more positive way can make a profound and lasting difference to your stress levels. A positive mental attitude takes practice and time, but you can start to see results immediately, and this will increase as long as you practice every day.

What is Positive Stress?

Stress does not always mean something negative. It need not be an awful experience always. There are times that stress can be a positive thing. In fact, there are two types of stress—Distress that is the negative stress, and Eustress, which is the positive stress. As one author wrote, two individuals may perceive a situation differently. One may see it as stressful at a certain point, while the other may not see it as such.

Normally, any situation that is perceived as threatening, or testing, or obliging for a quick change is downright stressful. However, people respond differently. They may see it either as “challenging” or “threatening.” Stress, apparently, does not affect everyone in the same way because experiencing stress is something that is subjective. Many factors contribute to how people perceive things.

The study of stress and coping resources tells us that skills and experience are not man’s only resources to cope with stress. Another available resource that plays a significant role in buffering the ill effects of stress is our social relationships. The claim that the effects of stress in people’s lives are influenced by how deep and how much they are active in terms of socializing with people. Stress is an everyday phenomenon that individuals have to face. Stress is everywhere; it either comes from the environment or within the individual himself. And everyone regardless of age experiences it.

Eustress, as defined earlier, is the type, which is actually good. It is the desirable kind, which actually helps one’s health and allows someone to feel content, and keeps one’s optimism in life.

There are various instances wherein a person experiences Eustress. One may experience it while seeing a suspense thriller movie. It can also be experienced when one gets excited out of winning a game, a sport, or the lottery perhaps. One may experience eustress whenever one feels he has accomplished a challenge. When he feels ecstatic out of riding a rollercoaster. When one feels euphoric when a baby is born, or when he is in one of those momentous occasions such as a wedding, a house purchase, graduation, job promotion, etc. These instances give to a person a tinge of nervousness and stress albeit in a good kind of way. So from now on, look at stress in two different light. It may mean negative most of the time, but not all the time.

Positive and Negative Stress

This is called positive stress. However, positive stress can become negative if it is not balanced and managed efficiently. Your goal is to aim for a positive stress phase.

Signs of positive stress

1. Increased creativity: not only in making or creating things but also in developing new ways to solve problems or finding better ways of doing things.

2. Increased productivity at work and on a personal level.

3. A general feeling of wellbeing, happiness and joy. It is your birthright to lead a happy, fulfilled live during your stay here on earth.

4. An immune system that functions optimally and is able to resist illness, infections, and cancer. Even if you are surrounded by people carrying all sorts of germs, you simply will not become ill.

Warning signs of negative stress.

1. Reduced productivity and creativity: nothing works the way it should. Everything is too much for you. You struggle or cannot find solution to problems. Because you are terrified of making the wrong decision, you end up not making any decision at all. You are unable to concentrate or remember things. Depression starts in much the same way.

2. A reduce feeling of wellbeing, joy and happiness: you no longer enjoy anything and don’t look forward to anything. Everything is a burden. These symptoms can be precursors of depression unless you take proper precautions in time.

3. All sort of unfortunate things happen to you. You become so preoccupied with the daily stress of living that, you are unable to focus or concentrate. This easily lead to car accidents, you drop and break things or lose them. You cannot remember anything; you cut yourself on a regular basis etc…

4. You start avoiding social contact. Shunning people for a long period is also a sign of depression. Remember that socialising is one of the basic human needs.

5. Your immune system functions poorly and suffers from colds, influenza, allergies, chronic fatigue, anxiety etc… Unless you take the necessary steps to restore your equilibrium.

6. The ageing process accelerates because of the increased metabolism associated with sustained, unmanaged stress. Free radicals and other waste products accumulate add cell activity deteriorates resulting in premature age
